Juan Rodriguez withdrew his nomination to become US ambassador to Guatemalaconfirmed a spokesperson for the United States Department to Free press this June 30th.
The decision marks a change in the diplomatic process, after he appeared before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, step prior to an eventual vote to confirm his appointment.
“Mr. Rodríguez withdrew his nomination to serve as United States Ambassador to Guatemala. We hope that President Trump will nominate a new candidate in the near future,” the spokesperson confirmed.
His retirement once again leaves the nomination for the US embassy in Guatemala vacant, a position that remains without a confirmed holder since the departure of the career diplomat. Tobin Bradleywho concluded his mission in the country weeks ago.
While Washington appoints a new candidate and he completes the confirmation process in the Senate, the diplomatic headquarters continues under the direction of a chargé d’affaires.
Defended anti-immigration agenda
During his appearance before the Committee last April, Rodríguez made it clear that, if confirmed, he would boost the foreign policy of Donald Trump’s administration towards Guatemala.
In his speech he maintained that the country is a “vital partner” for the United States, but argued that the irregular migrationdrug trafficking and China’s growing influence They represent challenges that must be addressed more firmly.
Rodríguez supported the Trump government’s line by making it a priority to strengthen cooperation to stop irregular migrationaccelerate the deportations of people without authorization to remain in the United States and combat human trafficking networks.
He also stated that he would seek bilateral cooperation to produce measurable results in terms of security, especially in the fight against drug trafficking.
