USA/In the framework of the tenth anniversary of the magazine The Sneezethe Bildner Center invites you to an essential meeting with the Cuban journalist Carla Gloria Colomé, recent winner of the LASA 2026 Media Award. Accompanied by the academic Ted A. Henken, Colomé will go through the seasons of a career marked by courage: from the break with the official press on the Island and the challenges of founding an independent media under state harassment, to her consolidation as a chronicler of exile and collaborator of El País in New York.
The talk will address vital topics to understand today’s Cuba and its diaspora:
The backroom of El Estornudo: How is a narrative journalism project sustained during a decade of political asphyxiation?
Reporting from the outside: The challenges of covering the immigration crisis, the policies of the Trump era and the 9/11 protests (for which he received the Mario Vargas Llosa Award for Young Journalism).
Dignity in exile: The experience of being an independent voice between Mexico and the United States without losing the pulse of what is happening on the Island.
An event to celebrate journalism that does not ask permission, humane and faithful to its sources, at a crucial moment for press freedom in the region.
Format: In person and via Zoom.
