Jereem “The Dream” Richards delivered a season’s best (SB) time of 44.87 seconds in the men’s 400-metre final to land the bronze medal in Sunday’s Diamond League event in Stockholm, Sweden. The result fell nicely in line with the favourable start he has had this year and could signal a build-up to much larger things in the future.
Richards took to social media immediately after the race to thank God for the result. He posted: “Started my Diamond League season with a 3rd-place finish in Stockholm (44.87). Thankful to God for his grace, protection, and the opportunity to compete at this level once again. It’s not about how you start, but how you finish, and this is only the beginning. The ball is rolling. Time to keep building. All Glory to God.”
He was positioned in lane seven, alongside a field that comprised the American duo of Jacory Patterson, who attended Dreher High School in Columbia, where he broke the state record in the 200m and won a state title in the 400m, and Khaleb McRae, a silver medallist in the 400m at the 2026 World Indoor Championships. In February of this year, McRae ran faster than the ratified indoor world record for the 400m with a time of 44.52 seconds. Also in the field was Charles Dobson of Great Britain, an Olympic bronze medallist and European champion in the relay.
Richards got off to a good start and maintained his position among the top four when the runners lined up for the final 100 metres. He eventually crossed the finish line in third position behind the winner, Zakithi Nene of South Africa, who clocked 44.48 seconds, and second-placed Patterson, who stopped the clock at 44.69.
McRae’s fourth-place finish at 44.94 seconds ensured that the top four runners all delivered sub-45-second times. Dobson secured fifth position in 45.15 seconds, which represented a season’s best time for him. The pair of Carl Bengtstrom (45.89) of Sweden and Muzala Samukonga (47.93) of Zambia completed the top seven finishers.
In January, Richards blazed to a golden finish at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at The Track in Boston, Massachusetts. With his performance, Richards also eclipsed the reigning Olympic 100m champion and eight-time world champion Noah Lyles into a silver medal position. In that four-man 300m final, Richards was swift to shift gears across the short distance and crossed the finish line in a blistering 32.14 seconds.
