MIAMI, USA – The Caribbean will have a powerful presence on the pitch this summer, as two of the region’s finest officials have been selected to work the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Jamaica’s Oshane Nation and Trinidad and Tobago’s Caleb Wales have both been named to the record-breaking “FIFA Team One” for the world’s biggest football spectacle.
Wales, who will serve as an assistant referee, joins Nation, a centre referee with an impressive résumé that includes the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The duo will fly the Caribbean flag high when the tournament kicks off across North America.
Their selections are part of a landmark announcement by FIFA on Thursday. For the first time, the World Cup will feature a staggering 170 match officials, comprising 52 referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials (VMOs).
This elite group hails from all six confederations and 50 Member Associations, making it the most comprehensive line-up of officials in FIFA World Cup history.
According to FIFA, the appointments were made using the governing body’s long-standing “quality first” principle. Key considerations included the consistency of performances at recent FIFA tournaments, as well as international and domestic competitions.
Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer and chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, hailed the chosen group as the absolute best in the game.
“The selected match officials are the very best in the world,” Collina said. “They were part of a wider pool of officials that was identified and monitored over the past three years. They have attended seminars and officiated at FIFA tournaments. In addition, their performances in domestic and international matches were regularly assessed.”
Collina also emphasised the unprecedented support system awaiting the officials. “The selected officials have received, and will continue to receive, comprehensive support from our fitness coaches and medical staff, including physiotherapists and a mental health specialist. Our goal is to ensure that they’re in optimal physical and mental condition when they arrive in Miami on 31 May.”
The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in history, featuring a 48-team line-up and 104 matches across an expansive North American footprint. That increase means a massive boost in personnel.
“This year’s FIFA World Cup will be the biggest in history. It’ll be the largest FIFA Team One ever, with 41 more match officials than at Qatar 2022,” Collina added.
