After knowing the preliminary results of the second presidential round in Colombia, Iván Cepeda sent a message of gratitude to the millions of citizens who supported his candidacy and stressed that the result demonstrates the strength of the ideas he defended during the campaign.
In a public statement after the pre-count, the Historic Pact candidate expressed his “most sincere, deep and affectionate recognition and gratitude” to the more than 12.7 million Colombians who voted for his proposal at the polls.
Cepeda assured that the support obtained confirms that the social and democratic transformation that he promoted during the campaign maintains a broad base of support in the country.
“With their support and support at the polls they consolidate our conviction that profound democratic social change in Colombian society is perfectly possible and is fully in force today in Colombia,” he stated.
The leftist leader also highlighted the closeness of the election, marked by a minimal difference compared to the candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, who gained an advantage in the pre-count released by the National Registry of Civil Status.
According to Cepeda, the race will go down in history for registering one of the narrowest margins in a presidential second round.
“We have reached the final stage of this electoral campaign with the narrowest difference in votes recorded in any second round election in Colombian electoral history,” he said.
The statement came while the consolidation of the official results was progressing and expectations persisted about the scrutiny process that must ratify the preliminary figures.
Although the pre-count favored De la Espriella, Cepeda chose to focus his message on the support received and the continuity of the ideas represented by his political movement.
His intervention sought to convey a message of recognition to his supporters and reaffirm that the millions of votes obtained reflect an important political current within Colombia.
