Android phone users in Panama can now access the Google Seismic Alert System, a free tool that allows you to receive notifications when an earthquake is detected near your location.
The incorporation of Panama into this system was announced by the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, who highlighted that the technology can offer a few seconds of anticipation before the strongest seismic waves arrive, a margin that could help people protect themselves.
However, the president clarified that alerts are not guaranteed in all cases, since their operation will depend on factors such as the number of active telephones in the areas where the earthquake is recorded.
How does the seismic alert system work?
The technology uses the accelerometers built into Android phones to detect movements that could correspond to an earthquake. When several devices register similar signals, the system analyzes the data and can send warnings to other cell phones located in areas that could be affected.
In this way, users can receive a notification to take protective measures before feeling the strongest seismic waves, as long as conditions allow the alert to be issued in time.
To check if the feature is available and enable it on your device, follow these steps:
Open the Settings or Configuration application on your cell phone.
Enter Security and emergency.
Look for the Earthquake Alerts option.
Activate the function to receive notifications.
Another alternative is to type “earthquake alerts” in the phone settings search engine.
The availability of this feature may vary depending on the device model and its configuration. Although it represents an additional tool for prevention, it does not replace the safety protocols or recommendations of the authorities in the event of a seismic event.
