Cristian Mungiu returned to the country after the new success achieved at the Festival of Film from cannes and shared a funny moment spent at the airport in France, before the flight to Romania. The director said that the Palme d’Or trophy, in the luggage, attracted the attention of the security guard at the airport control, who did not recognize the prestigious distinction.
The filmmaker joked about the situation and said that he probably met “the only Frenchman who didn’t know what a Palme d’Or is”.
According to Mungiu, the trophy was carefully checked after passing through the scanner. The security guard would take it out of the bag, scrutinize it and do the routine checks before letting it through.
“When he saw that thing, he was very amazed. He asked me what it was, took it out, looked at it, rubbed it with that thing and told me that I could pass”, reported the director, according to news.ro.
Arriving in Bucharest on Sunday evening, Cristian Mungiu was met by journalists at Henri Coandă Airport, where he provided more details about the episode at the security control.
“It was funny the first time, it was funny now. (…) He passed by the scanner and that person who scanned, you know how he looks, beep, beep, at every object and when he saw that thing, he was very amazed. Today I came across, I think, the only Frenchman in France who didn’t know what a Palme d’Or is, he asked me what a Palme d’Or is, took it out, looked at it, rubbed it with that thing, I asked: it’s dangerous? He said no, I don’t think so. Ok, so I was happy. I hope it’s not more dangerous in Romania,” said the director.
The second Palme d’Or for Cristian Mungiu
The success at Cannes places Cristian Mungiu in a select category of world cinema. At the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, the film “Fjord”, directed by the Romanian filmmaker, received the great Palme d’Or trophy.
It is the second such distinction obtained by Mungiu, after the victory in 2007 with “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”, a performance that brings him together with important names of international cinema who managed to win the prestigious award twice.
After the announcement of the result, several public figures, including Nicușor Dan, Maia Sandu and Ilia Bolojansent congratulatory messages for the Romanian director.
For his part, the director Tudor Giurgiu emphasized that such a result should be accompanied not only by public appreciation and recognition, but also by concrete support measures for Romanian cinema and for the promotion of the film “Fjord” in the race for awards Oscar.
