Barbados has secured its first-ever medal at a WorldSkills Competition, with Khajon Albert capturing bronze in Intelligent Security Technology at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.
Technical delegate for Barbados, Dario Walcott, described the achievement as a historic moment for the country and a significant milestone for Team Barbados.
“This has been extremely special, a special night for Barbados, a special night for Khajon Albert, winning the first-ever medal for Barbados at WorldSkills International,” Walcott said.
He noted that the achievement came during Barbados’ fifth appearance at the global competition.
“We started back in 2017, then 2019, 2022, 2024, and now 2026 in Shanghai, and it’s also the first time that this skill has been offered at WorldSkills…. And to come and medal, you know, this is tremendous. Man, I’m lost for words, to be honest.”
Walcott also highlighted the value of skills development and training to international standards, while acknowledging the support of a global partner that helped prepare the Barbados team.
He extended congratulations to Albert and the wider Team Barbados delegation, including the competitors, experts, and the team responsible for supporting the delegation from home.
“I just want to wish Khajon all congratulations, and I want to congratulate the entire team for the hard work—the competitors, the experts, the delegates, the team back home that work with the administration, and everything. A special, special thank you and congratulations to Team Barbados. Congratulations to Khajon and this one for Barbados.”
For Albert, the historic medal capped what he described as an amazing experience. He also acknowledged the efforts of his fellow competitors and the support he received throughout his journey.
“I would just like to say congratulations to Team Barbados, not just for their efforts, but for the dedication and passion that they put forward to each of their skills. They’ve done an amazing job, and I’m proud of all of them,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to his friends, family, and loved ones for their support, comfort, and encouragement throughout the competition.
“I would love to do it again, and yeah, on to my next chapter,” Albert said. (AR/BGIS)
