Muscat: The Histocompatibility Laboratory was inaugurated today at the National Genetic Centre in the Royal Hospital. This move marks a step that enhances the capacity of the healthcare system in the Sultanate of Oman to support organ transplant programmes and develop advanced diagnostic laboratory services aligned with the latest international standards.
The laboratory’s launch coincides with the addition of immunological compatibility testing using flow cytometry technology to the histocompatibility services now offered within the Sultanate of Oman. This test ranks among the most advanced examinations used to assess immunological compatibility between donor and recipient prior to organ transplant procedures.
Histocompatibility tests have been available in the Sultanate of Oman for years; however, compatibility testing using flow cytometry technology was previously conducted in laboratories outside the country, necessitating the sending of samples abroad to obtain results.
With the operation of the new laboratory, all histocompatibility tests—including immunological compatibility testing using flow cytometry technology—can now be performed locally and for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman.
This development is expected to accelerate the assessment process for organ transplant cases, reduce result waiting times, enhance the efficiency of medical decision-making, and lower the operational costs associated with sending samples outside the Sultanate of Oman.
The official inauguration of the Histocompatibility Laboratory at the National Genetic Centre represents a strategic step towards strengthening self-sufficiency in specialized diagnostic services and supporting national organ transplant programmes. This will positively impact the quality of healthcare and the success rates of transplant procedures for patients in the Sultanate of Oman.
