The Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis) registered aaccumulation of 1,979 earthquakes in Venezuela between June 24 and September 10as a result of the telluric sequence generated by the double earthquake with epicenter in the state of Yaracuy and Catia La Mar, in La Guaira.
The evaluation of the National Seismological Service covered a period of 1,872 hours of continuous monitoring through the country’s network of stations, with the aim of mapping the behavior of active faults and monitoring the tectonic stabilization process.
The technical data confirmed a concentration of events along the fault systems located in the central-western and north-coastal regions of the territory.
Behavior of recent seismicity
The technical cartography issued by the institution located the events of greatest magnitude on June 24 in the state of Yaracuy: the first recorded at 18:04 HLV with a magnitude of 7.2 Mw east of San Felipe, followed a minute later, at 18:05 HLV, by a second earthquake of magnitude 7.5 Mw.
Likewise, the epicenters were distributed mainly in the states of Yaracuy, Lara, Carabobo, Aragua, Miranda, La Guaira, Cojedes and the Capital District. in addition to registering activity in the Caribbean marine basin.
Regarding the most recent monitoring, the Funvisis network reported data between September 4 and 10 in which 105 new seismic events in the national geography. The movements recorded magnitudes of low to moderate intensity, located between 2.0 and 4.0 Mw.
The activity focused on sectors of La Guaira, Zulia, Falcón and the east of the country.
According to the technical evaluation, this behavior confirms “a trend of gradual stabilization and rearrangement of the plates tectonic structures after the intense initial activity.” Faced with this scenario, risk management organizations They reminded the community of the importance of staying calm and only attending to the information issued by official authorities.
