The president of Peru, Keiko Fujimoridefended this Friday his proposal to request in Congress an extension of the detention time of irregular migrants, allegedly linked to transnational criminal organizations, to be able to finish all the procedures before they have to be released.
Fujimori, in an interview with the Exitosa station cited by EFE, said that, to carry out this policy of expulsion of undocumented migrants, “(legislative) powers are also needed to be able to extend this period at the time they are detained” in Peruvian territory.
He added that he discussed this issue this Thursday with the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, during his visit to Lima, in order to “expel them and return them to Venezuela.”
The head of state asked Congress for powers to legislate on a series of issues related to citizen security, immigration and nationality matters, among other matters.
Shield of the Americas
On the other hand, during Rubio’s visit, Fujimori announced Peru’s entry into the Shield of the Americasthe coalition against organized crime promoted by Donald Trump, to which some 15 Latin American countries with right-wing governments have joined.
“There is organized international crime and so countries also have to join forces to confront them,” stated the Peruvian president, who highlighted that entry into the Shield of the Americas is “excellent news” for her country because “criminals do not respect borders.”
“They could move cities, go to another country, but with the entry of the Shield of the Americas we will know perfectly where they are”Fujimori added.
The governor anticipated that, when she has a “much better equipped” National Police and improves the justice administration system, along with the information that Trump’s initiative will offer, “in a few months we will have all the ringleaders captured.”
In this sense, Fujimori asked both chambers of Parliament for speedin the debate on legislative powers, because “it is what the population is demanding of us with just reason”, “that we make faster decisions” in the fight against organized crime.
