Shaheed El Hafed, 30 June (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, stressed that neither Morocco, the occupying state, nor any other foreign state can take away and trade our rights or decide our destiny for us.
The Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO made these remarks during an interview with the Spanish-language service of the Sahara Press Service (SPS). In the interview, he addressed the latest developments at the United Nations, including the visit made by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara to the Sahrawi party during the first week of this month.
The Sahrawi diplomat began his remarks by referring to the meetings held recently in Washington DC and Madrid. He said: “As we know, three ministerial meetings took place earlier this year, co-chaired by the United Nations and the United States. The meetings, held in Washington DC and Madrid, gathered the Foreign Ministers of the two parties, the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco, alongside the Foreign Ministers of the two neighboring and observer countries, Algeria and Mauritania. The aim of the talks was to discuss ways to implement the latest Security Council Resolution, 2797.”
He added: “All that can be said in this regard is that these meetings marked the beginning of a process; however, it is still early to assess its trajectory or ultimate outcome, particularly given the formidable challenges that persist. As we know, Morocco, the occupying state, continues its efforts to impose a fait accompli in the Occupied Territories of Western Sahara, alongside its ongoing human rights violations and the subjection of Sahrawi activists to torture and ill-treatment—facts recently acknowledged by the UN Committee Against Torture regarding the case of the political prisoners of the Gdeim Izik Group.”
Regarding the efforts of the United Nations to advance the peace process, the Sahrawi diplomat referred to the visit of Mr. Staffan de Mistura, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, to the Sahrawi refugee camps during the first week of this month, as part of his regional tour.
In this context, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar underlined the position of the Frente POLISARIO, stating: “The meeting between the Personal Envoy and the Sahrawi Leadership provided an opportunity to reaffirm the position of the Sahrawi party—namely, support for United Nations efforts to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara based on full respect for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi peopleto self-determination and independence, and the categorical rejection of any solution, regardless of its source, that seeks to legitimize the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara or undermine our people’s legitimate national aspirations for freedom, independence, and full sovereignty over their entire national territory.”
The Sahrawi diplomat also touched on the substantive session of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, which began on 15 June at the UN headquarters in New York, where many countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean called for respect for the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence andstressed the need to intensify efforts to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara—the last colony in Africa.
