Flisar’s novel won an award in London
Evald Flisar’s novel My Kingdom is Dying received the second Tadeusz Bradecki Award in London, which confirms its international literary resonance.
A novel Evald Flisar My kingdom is dying received the second Tadeusz Bradecki Prize 2026 in London, dedicated to original works published in English that transcend the boundaries between artistic disciplines, genres, themes and cultures and interweave fiction and reality in an original way. He translated the novel into English David Lemonand it was published by the London publishing house Istros Books.
The award, named after the internationally renowned Polish director, actor and writer Tadeusz Bradeck, was awarded for the second time this year. Among the 88 nominated works, the jury chose six finalists. Canadian Julian Brave NoiseCat won the main prize for the novel We Survived the Nightand third to Olivia Laing for the book The Silver Book.
A tense genre hybrid
My kingdom is dying was published in Slovenian in 2020 by KUD Sodobnost International and was nominated for Kresnik. The English editors describe the novel as a genre hybrid in which confession, detective story, memoir and fictional biography are connected, and at the same time as a combination of fiction, metafiction and meta-literary reflection. As they point out, the reader follows a suspenseful story in which unusual events intertwine with reflections on literature, memory and storytelling.
The English edition received a very good critical response. Critics described Flisar as a master of prose who knows how to draw the reader into psychologically complex stories, and the novel as a “charming and cleverly subversive” praise of the power of storytelling. In the foreground is a storyteller, writer and traveler who, with his own life story, constantly blurs the line between experience, imagination and literary self-reflection.
Evald Flisar is considered one of the most important Slovenian writers and playwrights of recent decades and one of the most translated Slovenian authors. His works have been translated into many languages, and his plays are performed in theaters on different continents. An important role in his international reception is also played by the translator David Limon, who translated several of Flisar’s works into English.
