Fixing interest rates supports the economy and investor confidence

Observers considered that the decision of the Qatar Central Bank to keep the current interest rates unchanged is a continuation that carries positive effects for the Qatari economy in the short term, most notably the stability of financing, supporting investor confidence, maintaining the attractiveness of the banking sector, and providing an appropriate environment for continued economic growth. The Qatar Central Bank kept the deposit interest rate at 3.85%, the lending rate at 4.35%, and the repurchase rate at 4.10%.

The decision to fix current interest rates without change reflects the continued monetary caution approach aimed at achieving a balance between supporting economic growth and maintaining financial and monetary stability.

The Qatari riyal is linked to the US dollar, making Qatari monetary policy often move in a direction similar to that of the US Federal Reserve. As the Federal Reserve continued to stabilize interest rates during its recent meetings, the Qatar Central Bank maintained the same approach to ensure the stability of the exchange rate and capital flows. Fixing interest rates also aims to provide a stable environment for the banking sector, companies and investors, especially in light of the uncertainty witnessed in global markets.

    Positive effects

As for the effects of the Qatar Central Bank’s decision to stabilize current interest rates on the banking sector, it means continuing stable profit margins for banks, maintaining the attractiveness of bank deposits, and stabilizing the cost of financing and liquidity within the financial sector.

As for companies, they will not face an additional rise in the cost of borrowing, and investors will gain greater clarity when planning long-term projects, in addition to supporting the business environment in non-oil sectors such as industry, services and logistics.

For individuals, stabilizing current interest rates means that current and variable loan installments remain relatively stable, that there is no new increase in the cost of real estate and consumer financing, and that current returns on deposits and savings instruments continue.

    Real estate demand

On the other hand, stabilizing interest supports the stability of real estate demand. Avoiding additional pressure on buyers and developers. Maintaining the pace of real estate financing at current levels.

    Qatari economy

As for the impact of the decision to stabilize interest rates on the Qatari economy in the next stage, it can be considered a message of confidence in the strength of the Qatari economy, as the Central Bank does not currently see the need to tighten or ease monetary policy. It also gives the markets a period of clarity and stability at a time when global markets are witnessing fluctuations related to inflation, oil prices and geopolitical tensions.

    Stock markets

The decision of the Qatar Central Bank to stabilize interest rates is also a supportive factor for the Qatar Stock Exchange, as it consolidates the state of monetary stability that investors prefer when making their investment decisions.

It is expected that fixing the interest rate will have positive repercussions on the market, including stabilizing the cost of financing for listed companies, which will reflect positively on their expansion plans and future profitability. Investors’ appetite for stocks has improved compared to savings instruments, especially if markets begin to expect a reduction in interest rates in the future. Supporting bank stocks by maintaining stable profit margins and continuing credit activity without sudden pressures. And enhancing confidence in the market as a result of clarity of monetary policy and stability of the economic environment. Attracting institutional and foreign investments seeking financially and economically stable markets.

At the trading level, stabilizing interest rates reduces the state of anticipation and anxiety that may accompany decisions to raise interest rates, which gives investors a clearer vision and encourages directing part of the liquidity towards stocks, especially banking, industrial and service stocks that benefit from stable financing costs.

In general, the decision is seen as positive for the Qatar Stock Exchange because it maintains the balance between supporting economic growth and financial sector stability, and provides a more suitable environment for long-term investment, especially in light of continued spending on development projects and diversification of the national economy.
