Fishing and catching was the theme of the three-day fair PolarExpo, which closed on Thursday. The fair was organized in Ilulissat sports hall in collaboration between Aalborg Kongres & Kultur Center and Avannaata Kommunia.
The mayor of Avannaata Municipality, Lars Erik Gabrielsen (S), assesses the event as positive for the parties concerned.
– When traders and traders who sell either equipment or paper-based services meet, it is good for everyone, so it is difficult to assess it differently. It is healthy and it is good that it is being held again, says the mayor to Sermitsiaq.
Similar events were also held in Ilulissat in 2022 and 2024. According to the director of Aalborg Congress & Culture Center, Nicolaj Holm, this year’s fair had more visitors than previous years. He informs Sermitsiaq of this.
– It is also the most well-attended of the three fairs we have had. So it’s going in exactly the right direction, says the director.
However, he does not want to disclose the exact number of visitors during the three days.
The co-organiser, Avannaata Kommunia, writes the following on his Facebook page on Friday.
– 45 exhibitors and over 2265 visitors were in the Hall in Ilulissat this week.
According to the director, there was good trade at the fair.
– I have spoken to the exhibitors, and they have made very good agreements. There is a really good atmosphere. Everyone is happy and in a good mood, says Nicolaj Holm.
Naalakkersuisoq: I have gained a lot from the discussions
Naalakkersuisoq for Fisheries, Catching, Agriculture and Self-sufficiency, Peter Borg (D), also participated in the fair during the three days. He tells Sermitsiaq that the meetings and discussions outside the fair have given him tools for his work.

– I have gained a lot from the meetings and conversations I have had. It was valuable for me to listen to and participate in the discussions between the fishermen’s and the prisoners’ organizations. It is expected that they will be used as tools in my further work, says Peter Borg.
The organizers: We will organize the fair again
The fair on fishing and catching ended on Thursday. But it won’t be the last time. The organizers have agreed to hold a similar fair again in week 41 of 2028.
– The agreement is that we will come again in two years. I also think that we will arrive in 4, 6 and 8 years, says Nicolaj Holm.
The mayor is also satisfied with the agreement to organize the exhibition again. According to him, the event is also a meeting place for business people and friends.
– Fishing takes up a lot of business. It is about the conditions of the citizens in the operation of the municipality and about the operation of the shops. We have agreed to repeat the event because it is of great importance as a driving force for the economy, and I am happy about that, says Lars Erik Gabrielsen.
Naalakkersuisoq are also satisfied that the organizers have agreed to hold the event again.
– It is very gratifying. Exhibitions like this offer many opportunities for the individual fisherman. Through new tools, new knowledge and debates, it creates conversations and discussions about how to move forward in the world of fishing, politically, in the organizations and among the individual fishermen.
– Therefore, it is important that the individual fishermen continue to be inspired in the way that happens at such fairs. Therefore, it is really good news that something similar will be organized again in two years, says Peter Borg.
