Municipal board member Gideon Lyberth has withdrawn from the coalition cooperation in Qeqqata Kommunia and instead made an agreement with the opposition parties.
There has arisen disagreement in the municipal council in Qeqqata Kommunia.
First deputy mayor Gideon Lyberth has left the coalition and instead made an agreement with the opposition parties.
In the municipality, mayor Malik Berthelsen (S) sits on a coalition consisting of Siumut and Inuit Ataqatigiit.
The two parties have until now exactly had a majority with 8 mandates, against the opposition’s 7 mandates.
With Gideon Lyberth leaving the coalition, the mayoral job may become more difficult for Malik Berthelsen in the remaining three years of the election period.
However, it is important to be aware that a mayor is elected for the entire period, so that his position as mayor is not immediately in danger.
Lyberth: Only Sisimiut is developed
As a reason for leaving the collaboration, Gideon Lyberth tells Sermitsiaq that it is due to a decision on the distribution of fixed assets:
– My primary reason for withdrawing from coalition cooperation is the decision to distribute construction funds based on the number of citizens.
– The way of doing it can result in a silent death sentence for the settlements. Avannaata Kommunia has done this in the past but has abandoned it again, as it could be seen that settlements and smaller settlements are not being developed enough, says Gideon Lyberth.
Still a member – but will not hesitate to opt out
Although Gideon Lyberth has left the coalition, he says he remains a member of Siumut:
– I continue as a kind of renegade in Qeqqata Kommunia, but understood in the sense that I leave the coalition parties.
– I will continue to represent Siumut if it is technically possible. If that is not possible, I will not hesitate to withdraw from Siumut either, as the majority of the municipal council’s work is not in line with my values, says Gideon Lyberth.
Creates new selection
According to Gideon Lyberth, he has agreed with the opposition parties Demokraatit, Atassut and Naleraq to set up a new committee to ensure that the municipality is involved in the development of the Tasersiaq hydropower project:
– The committee for business and raw materials must ensure that companies in Qeqqata Kommunia are involved in the Tasersiaq project.
– It is not just about the project’s providers, but also car workshops and other service providers who have to work around the project. So far, the municipality has not been involved, but we need that, so that citizens and businesses can also benefit from the project, says Gideon Lyberth.
