Ulaanbaatar, April 23, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The exhibition “Felt Wonders–New Voice” by the teachers and artisans of the Toin Amgalan Khairkhan Training Center opened on April 20 at the Mongolian National Art Gallery.
The exhibition features works that combine traditional techniques with modern design, including Mongolian national garment deel made by blending wool with other materials, abstract paintings, and felt compositions. It also aims to develop traditional craftsmanship, promote cultural heritage, and introduce the public to skilled felt artisans.
Speaking about the exhibition, Zagdtsend O., a craft instructor at a vocational education and skills training school, said, “We used to make everyday household items such as quilted felt mats and cushions from sheep’s wool. This time, we aimed to use the material in a more creative, artistic direction, producing works with abstract solutions that reflect Mongolian ways of life.
A total of 12 students are participating in the exhibition, presenting more than 20 artworks. If we include the felt clothing pieces, the exhibition comprises approximately 50–60 works. The participants prepare and process their own sheep’s wool materials and create felt garments for display. We are also focused on supporting young artists and promoting contemporary design and new approaches.”
Felt has many advantages: it is environmentally friendly, biodegradable and turns into compost, harmless to the human body, does not absorb moisture, and is lightweight yet warm, making it suitable for broader everyday use.
In addition to creating artworks, teacher Zagdtsend is actively involved in providing vocational education to children with disabilities and supporting their employment opportunities. She places particular emphasis on helping her students develop the skills to create their own jobs and earn income through their craftsmanship, offering them practical support.
The exhibition will be open to the public until April 26.
