The dominant title hunters from FC Bayern Munich have reached the DFB Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen and are still dreaming of a treble. Coach Vincent Kompany’s team deservedly won 2-0 (1-0) in the semi-final against the Rhinelanders.
Bayern, who completed their 35th German championship on Sunday and are also in the semi-finals of the Champions League, still have their sights set on winning all the important trophies. Leverkusen, however, will end the first season after coach Xabi Alonso without a trophy.
First cup final since the 2019/2020 triple season
In front of 30,210 spectators in the sold-out BayArena, Harry Kane (22nd minute) scored the 1-0 for Munich. Luis Díaz scored in stoppage time to make it 2-0 (90+4) for the guests, who can now look forward to the final on May 23rd in Berlin. For Bayern it is the first cup final in six years. Back then, the team won the triple under coach Hansi Flick. The opponents this Thursday are VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg.
For Leverkusen, the remaining four games of the season are about qualifying for the Champions League again. Coach Kasper Hjulmand’s team is currently in sixth place and is four points behind a premier class place.
Bayern immediately took control of the pitch. Right from the start, the Munich team often had the ball, ran the ball safely and created their first chances. An attempt from Dayot Upamecano flew over the goal, Luis Díaz and Kane from a tight angle were denied by Bayer keeper Mark Flekken.
Kane gives Bayern a deserved lead
The hosts tried to playfully free themselves from the master pressing. However, that almost didn’t work at all. Leverkusen had big problems with the high-flying Munich team.
So Bayern’s lead was hardly surprising. Jamal Musiala passed flat into the penalty area from the right. There, Kane didn’t optimally receive the ball that Díaz let through, but he still hit the corner precisely.

“FC Bayern, we’re going to Berlin,” sang the Munich fans – less than 25 minutes had been played. And her team continued to play forward. Kimmich, Olise and Kane didn’t pose a serious threat to the Flekken goal with their shots. However, Bayern kept Leverkusen so busy in their half that the Hjulmand team basically couldn’t get forward at all. If the guests had to be blamed for something, it was that they were only 1-0 up at the break.
Neuer saves for Bayern
After the restart, the Kompany team continued where they left off. The eye-catching Musiala chipped past Flekken, but Bayer captain Robert Andrich saved for his beaten goalkeeper.
Leverkusen now tried to free themselves from Bayern’s forechecking with long balls. At least that worked sometimes. Nathan Tella shot from distance and forced the previously almost unemployed Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal to make his first save in the 52nd minute.
Because Josip Stanisic and Kane failed on the other side due to Flekken’s brilliant performance, the game remained open for a long time despite Bayern’s continued great superiority. But Leverkusen could no longer take advantage of this. Díaz, on the other hand, completed a late counterattack to make it 2-0. The game didn’t even start after that.
