The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) says the tropical Pacific Ocean is currently in an ENSO-neutral state, meaning neither El Niño nor La Niña conditions are present.
In its latest El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) update issued on 24 April 2026, SIMS said sea surface temperatures across the central Pacific remain near average, although warmer waters below the surface are developing.
“International climate models now indicate that El Niño conditions are likely to develop between May and July 2026 and could persist through the end of the year. However, forecasters note that some uncertainty remains, although confidence is increasing in a transition toward El Niño,” the statement said.
If El Niño conditions develop, SIMS warns Solomon Islands could experience below-normal rainfall in the coming months, with a higher risk of dry spells and possible drought conditions later in the year.
The update also highlights the likelihood of warmer daytime temperatures and the need for close monitoring of water resources, agriculture, and fire risk.
SIMS said it will continue to monitor ENSO developments closely and provide regular updates, including seasonal outlooks and weather advisories.
