Amid the controversy over delays in the delivery of electoral materials at voting locations in Lima, the Municipality of Miraflores has expressed its rejection, pointing out that “non-compliance with schedules, disorganization and lack of adequate conditions” They mainly affected elderly neighbors and people with disabilities.
Therefore, through a statement, the municipality considered what happened as “a serious lack of respect” and a clear violation of the guarantees necessary to exercise the constitutional right to vote in decent conditions.

In this context, the entity led by Carlos Canales, from Renovación Popular, urged the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) to offer “a clear explanation of the events that occurred.” Likewise, he demanded the intervention of the Public Ministry, requesting that it act in accordance with its powers.
On the other hand, the municipality announced that His Attorney General’s Office is evaluating the possible existence of a crime derived from the delaysand, if found, a criminal complaint will be filed against those responsible.
In addition, the Miraflores commune called on the National Elections Jury (JNE), whom they sued “an explanation to the residents of Miraflores” and delivery of accurate information about the inspection and sanctions that will be applied.

At the end of their statement, they recalled that, in addition to the presidential elections, regional and municipal elections will also be held this year. In this sense, they stressed that “ONPE is not a guarantee of anything.”
The organization chaired by Piero Corvetto justified the delays by pointing out that the company in charge of transportation did not comply with the contractswhich forced last-minute measures to be taken, causing inconvenience among voters.
Due to these difficulties presented and due to the recurring complaints about the delay in the installation of voting tables, the head of the ONPE, Piero Corvettoannounced that voting hours will be extended until 6:00 p.m.
Likewise, the president of the JNE, Roberto Burneoconfirmed that the deadline for the installation of the tables was exceptionally extended until 2:00 p.m. to avoid absenteeism and guarantee citizens’ right to vote.
