
Santo Domingo/An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was recorded this Tuesday in the Dominican Republic and was felt by part of the population, without initially reporting personal or material damage, although the evacuation of a building in the country’s capital was reported.
The tremor occurred at 11:20 local time with its epicenter in the northeast of the country, 6.8 kilometers southeast of the tourist city of Las Terrenas, and at a depth of 100 meters, the Dominican National Seismology Center told EFE.
The tremor was felt in that part of the country and also in Santo Domingo, the capital, where at least one government office building was evacuated.
The tremor occurred at 11:20 local time with the epicenter in the northeast of the country, 6.8 kilometers southeast of the tourist city of Las Terrenas.
In addition, 14 minutes later, a 2.6-point aftershock was recorded with an epicenter 5.1 km east of Las Terrenas and at a depth of 3 km.
The island of Hispaniola, shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, is located in an area of great seismic activity due to a system of more than a dozen geological faults that cross almost the entire landmass and some nearby marine areas.
In the Dominican Republic, hundreds of earthquakes occur every month, generally of low intensity.
