Former Greek international defender Marios Oikonomou suffered a motorcycle accident on Sunday and is in hospital in a critical condition.
Marios Oikonomou (33) was riding his personal motorcycle when he collided with a car driven by a 63-year-old man. The accident happened in his hometown, Ioannina, and the former footballer was immediately taken to Hatzikostas hospital, where he underwent surgery for serious head injuries. According to Greek and Italian media, Oikonomou is currently hospitalized in intensive care and is said to be in critical condition.
AEK Athens, the Greek champion club, for whom Oikonomou played between 2018 and 2020, released a statement saying they stand with her former teammate and his family, “with the hope that he will be able to emerge victorious from the most difficult battle of his life.”
Marios Oikonomou played in Giannina, Cagliari, Bologna, Bari, AEK Athens, FC Copenhagen, Sampdoria and Panetolikos, the club from which he retired two years ago.
