- US President Donald Trump will miss the US’s first World Cup game against Paraguay on Friday in Los Angeles.
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to lead the official US delegation instead.
- Paraguay President Santiago Peña is traveling to California specifically to attend the game.
According to consistent media reports, US President Donald Trump is not planning a personal visit to the USA’s World Cup opening game against Paraguay this Friday. This was first reported by the news portal “Politico” and the sports magazine “The Athletic”, citing people familiar with the matter. The White House and the State Department did not initially respond to a request.
Secretary of State Rubio leads delegation
A spokesman for the US State Department had previously announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would travel to the game south of Los Angeles. He should lead a delegation that also included Transport Minister Sean Duffy and Homeland Security Minister Markwayne Mullin. On the sidelines of the World Cup game, Rubio wanted to talk to the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, about topics such as “regional security, trade, investments and new technologies”.
The USA, together with Mexico and Canada, are co-hosts of the largest World Cup in history. For the first time, 48 teams are taking part, with a total of 104 games up to the final. The USA will play two of its three group games at the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers NFL Stadium in Inglewood, south of the city limits. In addition to Paraguay, the US national team also faces Australia and Turkey.
