WANICA — What started as an ‘innocent’ grass fire turned into an immense conflagration, which completely destroyed a house, welding and spraying company and at least nineteen vehicles in Lelydorp on Saturday afternoon. The Suriname Police Force (KPS) reported on its website on Monday (today) that there were no personal accidents in the fire on the Gotong Royongweg. The Lelydorp police are responsible for further investigation.
The on-site investigation revealed that RM’s father started the fire to burn grass behind a shed where spraying materials were stored. However, he left the location, leaving no supervision.
According to the police, the flames suddenly spread to the welding and spraying facility due to the strong wind. A low-rise house and an estimated nineteen parked vehicles were also completely destroyed. The house was not insured against fire.
The report of the fire was received around one o’clock on Saturday afternoon by the police, who were called in by the 41-year-old RM. The Lelydorp fire brigade and the Energy Companies of Suriname were also directed to the scene of the disaster.
