Peasant and student organizations announced that this April 22 they will hold a series of demonstrations in the capital to make requests related to the national situation: PMT shares alternative routes.
According to information from La Red, the Peasant Development Committee (Codeca), the Peasant Committee of the Altiplano, the National Front of Struggle and student organizations in resistance from the University of San Carlos (Usac) will participate in the mobilizations.
In a press conference this Monday, April 20, the organizers reported that the mobilizations will take place in the “four cardinal points” of the capital.
They explained that the demonstrations will be concentrated in El Trébol, the Ring Road, the Obelisco area and Martí Street.
In that sense, Amílcar Montejo, road spokesman for the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT), indicated that the epicenter could be in El Trébol, where marches would be concentrated from various points.
He added that traffic could vary from early in the morning, after the announcement that protesters would meet at 8 a.m.
According to Montejo, many motorists who are not involved in the demonstrations could modify their entry into Guatemala City and enter between 4 and 5 hours to avoid delays at their destination.
He added that traffic could be complicated between the route to the Atlantic and Martí Street; between the Inter-American route and the Roosevelt road, and from the route to the Pacific towards the Aguilar Batres road, as well as from the CA-1 Oriente route towards zones 10 and 15.
He also indicated that the movement of students could be affected.
What is the reason for the demonstrations?
According to the organizers, the demonstrations will be against the re-election of Walter Mazariegos as rector of the Usac.
Among other requests, they will demand that the Government “stop ignoring the peasantry and respond with a real policy on land and territory.”
They will also demonstrate in favor of food sovereignty, because, according to them, there are resources, but “they are being diverted by corruption and political clientelism, while communities go hungry.”
In addition, they will ask President Bernardo Arévalo to “break with the pacts of impunity in the election of the attorney general and guarantee a Public Ministry at the service of justice, not the powerful.”
Another demand will be to stop inflation and reduce the price of fuel.
