A 30-year-old man is accused of killing his girlfriend in August 2025 in Nuuk. On Tuesday morning, he tells Sermersooq Circuit Court that he defended himself in the situation and did not want to kill the woman.
Tuesday morning started the murder case against a 30-year-old man who is accused of the murder in Blok M on Ceresvej in Nuuk last year. The short-haired man in a dark hoodie has taken his seat in Sermersooq District Court’s courtroom 3 in Nuuk.
According to the indictment, the man has beaten and strangled a 44-year-old woman who was his girlfriend. It happened on Thursday 7 August 2025 in the hours after midnight.
The man has said that he lived with his girlfriend in Blok M, and they sometimes argued. On the evening in question, they had visited and drank with others, before things went wrong in a situation between the two.
According to the man’s explanation, she came at him with a bread knife, which was also found at the scene:
– She said she wanted to stab me, and I protected myself from the knife and pushed her on the neck, says the defendant.
At first we got the impression that the man would plead guilty to manslaughter this morning in the circuit court. It now turns out that he basically doesn’t:
– It was not my intention to kill her, emphasizes the defendant.
Different explanations
There is apparently a significant difference between the 30-year-old’s husband’s current explanation in court and what he explained to the police in August 2025.
According to the material read out, he then confirmed that he hit his girlfriend and strangled her for several minutes. Today he says that it was not suffocation, but a brief pressure on the neck.
He also believes that he tried first aid in the situation, which he has previously denied.
Prosecutor Kristian Buskov asks why he said something different then than he does now.
– I don’t know that. I was very shocked, replies the defendant.
Will go after custodial sentence
The prosecutor shows some photos from the crime scene and an autopsy report, which indicates that the cause of death is suffocation by strangulation (i.e. by grabbing the neck).
Kristian Buskov asks how the presented material fits with the new interpretation that is now emerging. The accused man maintains:
– I pressed her on the neck and she fell over on the bed… and then she didn’t move, he says.
After the defendant’s statement, we plan to hear some witnesses and see some documentation.
The prosecutor will also argue that the defendant should be sentenced to indefinite detention if the circuit court finds him guilty of the murder.
