A local artisan is using the traditional craft of crochet to combat the rising tide of lifestyle‑related illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes.
Founder of Elaine’s Caribbean Crochet, Nikisha Toppin, recently hosted Crochet for a Cause: Hooked on Healthy, an innovative programme designed to educate crafters on holistic wellbeing while simultaneously keeping their hands busy.
Founded as a legacy of love for the grandmother who taught her the skill, Toppin’s organisation successfully merged the therapeutic art of crochet with crucial health education.
The event featured comprehensive health screenings, including blood pressure and blood sugar testing provided by the Lions Club, alongside nutritional guidance from the Ministry of Health and Wellness through the National Nutrition Centre.
To bridge the gap between crafting and physical health, participants created crocheted replicas of fruits and vegetables, each paired with specific educational information to encourage better lifestyle choices.
“This ensures that the persons who purchase these items can have a daily reminder of how they can incorporate healthy eating into their diet,” Toppin explained.
Beyond the nutritional messaging, Toppin emphasised the inherent mental‑health benefits of the craft itself, noting that the repetitive nature of crocheting stimulates brain function and serves as a powerful stress reliever.
“It helps with mental health struggles that people may go through,” Toppin said. “The incorporation of crochet as a therapeutic tool, as well as the information that is being shared through education, is ensuring that we’re heading towards having healthier lives.”
