Cricket legend and former West Indies captain Sir Garfield “Garry” Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced, has died at the age of 89.
Cricket West Indies announced his passing in a brief but poignant tribute on its official X account, stating: “A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers.”
The Barbados-born icon enjoyed an illustrious international career spanning two decades, representing the West Indies from 1954 to 1974. He played 93 Test matches, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and claiming 235 wickets with his unique ability to bowl both pace and spin.
Sobers’ place in cricket history was cemented in 1958 when, at just 23 years old, he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan. The innings set a new world record for the highest individual Test score, a mark that stood for 36 years and remains the fourth-highest individual score in Test cricket history.
He captained the West Indies between 1965 and 1972, leading one of the sport’s most talented teams during a transformative era for Caribbean cricket.
In addition to his international exploits, Sobers enjoyed a distinguished county career with Nottinghamshire, scoring more than 7,000 first-class runs for the English club, including 18 centuries, while taking 281 wickets. In 1968, he etched his name into the record books by becoming the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in a first-class match.
Reacting to his death, Nottinghamshire described Sobers as “cricket’s greatest-ever all-rounder and an iconic figure in Nottinghamshire history.”
“We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, at the age of 89,” the club said in a statement.
Sobers was knighted in 1975 for his services to cricket and was later named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the 20th Century, recognising his extraordinary contribution to the sport.
His legacy also lives on through the International Cricket Council’s highest individual men’s honour, the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, awarded annually to the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
Renowned for his elegant left-handed batting, exceptional fielding and unmatched versatility with the ball, Sir Garfield Sobers is widely considered one of the finest cricketers ever to play the game. His influence extended far beyond statistics, inspiring generations of players across the Caribbean and around the world.
