A Libyan security body says a Syrian man sentenced to eight years in prison is continuing to move freely inside Libya and abroad despite being wanted since 2022.
The Support Apparatus for Security Directorates in the Regions said it had tracked the movements of the man, known as “Abu Khalaf al-Souri”, who was convicted over his role in a network trading stolen copper cables.
According to the statement, he was arrested in 2022 and allegedly attempted to bribe officials with 1.5 million Libyan dinars in exchange for his release.
The body added that information received about eight months ago indicated he had left prison before completing his sentence after paying money to certain parties.
Investigations later suggested he has been travelling between Libya and Syria using a passport with altered identity details.
Officials say he has recently entered Benghazi and remains there, reportedly coordinating with individuals described in the statement as “corrupt”, while preparing to return to Tripoli.
