Including its supplier network, Meyer Turku’s shipyard employs around 13,000 workers.
Cruise giant Royal Caribbean Group has confirmed orders for sixth and seventh Icon-class cruise ships to be built at the Meyer Turku shipyard.
The ships are scheduled to be delivered in 2029 and 2030, according to a Meyer Turku press release.
The new orders are part of the cruise firm’s long-term agreement with Meyer Turku through 2036.
“Through our long-standing partnership with Meyer Turku, the Finnish government, and the strong Finnish maritime cluster, we are reimagining the industry for decades to come while also delivering meaningful economic impact for Finland,” Royal Caribbean’s CEO and chair, Jason Liberty, said in the release.
The third Icon-class cruise ship Meyer Turku is completing work on, the Legend of the Seas, went on its first test run last week. It is a 365-metre-long vessel designed to carry 5,600 passengers, making it among the world’s largest of its kind.
“The orders of sixth and seventh Icon Class vessels are a significant recognition of Meyer Turku and the Finnish maritime industry’s talent and expertise. This milestone represents an important step forward in our partnership with Royal Caribbean Group to develop the shipbuilding sector over the next decade and beyond,” Meyer Turku CEO Casimir Lindholm said in the release.
The shipyard has built 25 ships for Royal Caribbean over the course of more than three decades, according to the company.
Meyer Turku said that, including its supplier network, it employs around 13,000 workers, “contributing over a billion euros annually to Finland’s economy”.
“Each Icon ship represents the largest industrial projects in Finland,” the release read.
