There’s fears that Australia’s 2.5 billion dollar deportation deal with Nauru has led to an erosion of civil liberties in the country following the creation of a new security force.
Community monitoring officers as they are called will have powers to restrain, search, and monitor non-citizens transferred from Australia, with the use of “reasonable force” if required, but in a twist the laws were recently amended to extend those powers to any person on Nauru.
“What we’re seeing is this degradation of pretty fundamental protections in Nauruan society, and that’s being delivered because of Australia’s toxic approach to dealing with people who came here as refugees,’ said Greens Senator David Shoebridge.
“The Nauru Government than decided to expand those powers to every Nauruan and this is how you see Australia’s brutal refugee policy undermining civil rights in Nauru.”
