As Director of Sustainment Data under the Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Materiel Readiness, Kertiste plays a crucial role in ensuring the U.S. Department of War’s operational readiness. His strategic expertise involves delivering trusted sustainment data, leveraging advanced analytics, and integrating digital capabilities to ensure the Joint Force remains ready, resilient, and decisively informed. This work directly supports the mission to enhance weapons systems readiness and spearhead the adoption of innovative sustainment technologies.
From Roseau to the Pentagon
Kertiste’s journey from Roseau, Dominica, to the halls of the Pentagon is nothing short of inspiring. His career began when he enlisted in the United States Army in February 1998. Through determination and excellence, he earned his commission as a Warrant Officer in 2006, embarking on a distinguished 23-year military career. His service record is marked by diverse tactical, operational, and strategic-level assignments, including roles as a Property Accounting Technician with the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade in Germany and as a Global Combat Support System Lead Functional Analyst in Virginia.
Kertiste’s career featured multiple deployments to Bosnia, Kuwait, and Iraq, culminating in a prestigious assignment at the White House Communications Agency, where he directly supported the President, Vice President, and First Lady of the United States from 2016 to 2021.
Advancing Defense Logistics and Cyber Capabilities
Upon retiring from the U.S. Army as a Chief Warrant Officer Four (Promotable) in October 2021, Kertiste continued to excel in defense logistics. Before his current role, he served as the Deputy Director for Logistics Data, Visualization, and Cyber, and Deputy Director for Strategic Logistics within the Joint Staff J4. In these capacities, he was instrumental in advancing the Joint Logistics Enterprise (JLEnt) through innovative strategies that bolstered the readiness, resilience, and global reach of the Joint Force.
His contributions in integrating strategic logistics planning and developing cyber policies have been crucial in shaping the evolution of defense logistics.
Academic Pursuits and Recognitions
In addition to his professional achievements, Kertiste is committed to academic excellence. He is currently a PhD candidate at Vanderbilt University, specializing in Organizational Leadership and Learning. His academic credentials include a Master of Science in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma (Summa Cum Laude), a Bachelor of Science in Multi-Disciplinary Studies and Criminal Justice from Grantham University (Magna Cum Laude), and an Associate of Arts in General Studies from the University of Maryland University College. He also completed the Strategic Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Kertiste’s exemplary service and dedication have earned him numerous awards, such as the Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, Army Legion of Merit, and the Presidential Service Badge.

Upholding the Legacy of His Father through the Kertist A. Augustus Foundation
The late Kertist Alphoncous Augustus, born in Roseau, Dominica, in 1947, was a distinguished leader in labor unionism. As General Secretary of the Waterfront and Allied Worker’s Union (WAWU) in 1970, he played a critical role in transforming labor conditions in Dominica by securing better wages, working conditions, and benefits for over 500 workers. In 1998, he was elected President of WAWU, where he continued to champion workers’ rights, stabilize the union, and promote free collective bargaining. His enduring impact as a defender of workers’ rights is deeply cherished within his community.
Inspired by Kertist’s unwavering dedication to service and leadership, the Kertist A. Augustus Foundation was established in collaboration with his son and WAWU. The Foundation views higher education as a catalyst for personal and societal advancement, striving to cultivate a community that values educational achievement. It ensures that positive educational outcomes are accessible to all, regardless of economic background, thereby honoring Kertist’s legacy by empowering youth through scholarships and mentorship.
Presently, the Foundation sponsors five high school students and one recent Dominica State College graduate, Nadjae-Ann Shillingford, who achieved First Class Honors in Paralegal Studies. Through these initiatives, the Foundation continues to uphold Kertist’s vision of empowerment and opportunity for future generations, giving back to Dominica and its youth.
