Tusass has completed over 150 digital courses across the country. In Maniitsoq, the teaching culminated in a unique collaboration with the local business community, where 8th graders turned coding into concrete solutions for the future.
Since 2020, Tusass has the work targeted at strengthening children and young people’s digital skills through the Coding Class initiative. The project is rolled out in close collaboration with the country’s municipalities, and so far 153 courses have been completed across the country.
The core of Coding Class is creative coding, where students learn through hands-on experience. The aim is to give the young people concrete skills that go far beyond the screen, so that they are able to translate technical knowledge into solutions to real problems.
To ensure the project’s local anchoring, 28 teachers have been trained to take care of the teaching, which makes it possible for the schools themselves to continue the digital development in everyday life.
Coding in Atuarfik Kilaaseeraq – Maniitsoq
Most recently, in weeks 10 and 11, Tusass visited Atuarfik Kilaaseeraq in Maniitsoq to teach the town’s 8th graders. Here, the effort arouses enthusiasm; a local teacher at the school describes the course as both highly experiential and educational for the students. This is stated by Tusass in a press release.
– The Coding Class teaching has been an experiential and educational week for most students, who already had knowledge of the use of iPad and Gaming from their own everyday life at school. The Coding Class teacher had prepared perfectly for the lesson and was very welcoming to all of us, says Helene Heilmann, a teacher in Atuarfik Kilaaseeraq.
Arctic Circle Business builds a bridge between the school and the business world
Alongside the teaching at the school in Maniitsoq, Tusass and Arctic Circle Business entered into a strategic collaboration. The purpose of the partnership was to make the teaching even more realistic by presenting the students with a real-life case that they had to solve through Coding Class.
– For us, it has been important to hear the voice of the young people. Through Coding Class, we have gained an insight into their ideas and solutions to real problems, and it has been inspiring to see their commitment. At the same time, it is important for Arctic Circle Business to build a bridge between the school and the business world, so that students get a better insight into the local education and job opportunities, says CEO of Arctic Circle Business, Naasunnguaq Beck Kristensen.
Coding Class should inspire the children for their future studies
Students gained hands-on experience as they learned to program and develop their own games. As part of the initiative, member companies of Arctic Circle Business presented their daily work and career paths – with a clear ambition to fertilize the ground for the young people’s future educational choices.
The course culminated in a project fair, where the students presented their finished games and solutions in small stalls. Here they had the opportunity to pitch their results directly to the participating companies, which underscored the link between the school bench and the real world of business.
– It was fantastic to experience how the students accepted the challenge and worked engaged with their solutions during their Coding Class course. The collaboration with the school and Arctic Circle Business worked really well and has given the students the opportunity to work with real-life issues from the local business community, says Nivi Thomassen Olsen, learning consultant and Coding Class teacher.
