Closing of the campaign in Lima: Where did the candidates hold their last rallies and tours?

The candidates for the Lima Mayor’s Office They closed their electoral campaigns last Thursday with rallies, caravans and activities in districts with a high number of voters, such as San Juan de Lurigancho, Villa El Salvador and Los Olivos, three days before the municipal elections on Sunday, October 4.

Thursday was the last day to hold public demonstrations of a political nature. In accordance with electoral restrictions, these activities were prohibited from 00:00 this Friday, October 2.

Rafael Lopez Aliagacandidate for first councilor for Renovación Popular, led a closing rally on Avenida de la Peruanidad, in Jesús María, the same setting that he has used in previous electoral campaigns.

At the rally he was accompanied by former presidential candidate Carlos Álvarez.

Previously, López Aliaga toured San Juan de Lurigancho in a caravan along with Américo Zegarra, Renovación Popular candidate for mayor of that district.

He was also in El Agustino and Pueblo Libre. In this last district he promised works: “This campaign is very intense, devastating, but I do it with a lot of love for God and the children of God. (…) I am committed to allocating resources for metropolitan avenues, security cameras,” he said.

López Aliaga assured that when he arrived at the Municipality of Lima, in 2023, “everything was broken.” “Now I’ve cleaned up. There’s plenty of money,” he said.

The presence of López Aliaga at the closing of the campaign responds to the particular situation of Renovación Popular in this election. Luis Rubio, who had been registered as a candidate for Mayor of Lima by that party, resigned his candidacy. As a consequence, López Aliaga remained at the head of the list of councilors.

Carlos Brucea candidate for Somos Perú, questioned López Aliaga’s candidacy on Thursday before the observer mission of the Organization of American States (OAS).

After meeting with the mission, he told the press: “The last thing we want as Peruvians is for us to have an international scandal and a poorly made election on Monday. We seek to ensure that this election is not invalidated, that it represents the feelings of the people of Lima, and we hope that the jury will take the necessary actions to make this happen.”

The Somos Perú candidate held a closing rally at the Óvalo Las Palmas, in Villa El Salvador, after holding the meeting with the mission.

There he promised to create a municipal version of the “Techo Propio” program.

“We offer works, but well done, within the framework of the law. We will carry out the Lima Own Tech program,” he said.

In addition, he questioned the management of Rafael López Aliaga. “We are just a few days away from making important decisions. Let them not promise us to be a world power or other lies. The management has left the municipality in debt, with incomplete works and other irregularities that will be sanctioned.”

At the close of this edition, his campaign team reported that the candidate would close the day in Barranco.

Bruce’s closure was preceded by the support of the Progresemos leadership. On Wednesday night, its president, Paul Jaimes, announced his support for Bruce after Luis Miguel Llanos, that party’s candidate for Mayor of Lima, declined his candidacy to support Francis Allison, of Avanza País.

Jaimes questioned Llanos’ decision and stated that it had not been supported by the Progresemos leadership.

Francis AllisonAvanza País candidate, closed his campaign with a rally in Ate, accompanied by his wife, his children and the candidate for mayor of that district, Manuel Vidal.

In his last speech, Allison promised to demand the elimination of the Urban Transportation Authority (ATU) for Lima and Callao. “We are going to demand that the ATU disappear. That is my commitment,” he said.

He also noted that he will work “in a serious manner.” “We are moved by the firm belief that everyone has the right to live better. (…) We are going to work seriously, firmly, no matter what the cost and whoever falls, so that you can live in peace. The corrupt authorities allow us to be killed, to be extorted,” he said.

On Thursday, Allison added the support of former presidential candidate Álvaro Paz de la Barra, of the Faith in Peru party.

Furthermore, hours before his last rally, he broadcast a video on his social networks along with Pablo Villanueva, known as Melcochita, and Monique Pardo.

“Our artists deserve spaces, opportunities and recognition. Lima will once again support art and culture, because a city that values its artists keeps its identity alive,” the candidate wrote on his social networks.

Daniel Urresti, Podemos Peru candidate, led his closing ceremony on Carlos Izaguirre Avenue, in Los Olivos.

Urresti was in Comas on Monday, on Tuesday he participated in activities in Independencia and on Wednesday and Thursday he toured San Juan de Lurigancho, where he accompanied the closing of the campaign of José Luna Morales, Podemos Peru candidate for district mayor.

The campaign reaches this stage with 26 political organizations competing for the Mayor of Lima, a number that expanded the dispersion of candidates in the capital. Among the applicants are, in addition to López Aliaga, Bruce, Allison and Urresti, Ricardo Belmont, Elio Riera, Susel Paredes, Yehude Simon, Victoria La Cruz, Segundo Valdez, Mónica Yaya and other candidates.
