Lights, camera, and cultural celebration took centre stage in the capital as Chinese Film Week officially opened, marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and China and the Laos–China Friendship Year 2026.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, the Embassy of China in Laos, and China Media Group (CMG), the six-day festival is being held from 21–26 April at Major Cineplex, Vientiane Center. With free admission, the event is attracting film enthusiasts, students, and families eager to experience a diverse selection of Chinese cinema.
The opening ceremony on 20 April was attended by senior officials, including Mr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, President of the Lao Front for National Development, underscoring the importance both nations place on cultural cooperation.
At the heart of the festival are seven carefully selected Chinese films, offering audiences a rich mix of genres—from inspiring stories of patriotism and youth development to science-themed narratives, comedy, and heartfelt family dramas. Organisers say the films not only entertain but also showcase China’s rapid development and the energy of its people in the modern era.
Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Ms Suanesavanh Vignaket highlighted the strategic role of cultural exchange in strengthening bilateral ties. She noted that the Lao Government places high importance on fostering closer people-to-people connections as part of building a Laos–China community with a shared future.
In a move to extend the festival’s reach, screenings will also be held in provinces such as Luang Prabang, Houaphanh, and Champasak, bringing the cinematic experience to wider audiences across the country.
Chinese Ambassador to Laos, Ms. Fang Hong emphasised the power of film as a bridge between cultures, describing it as a medium that speaks directly to the heart while deepening mutual understanding. She pointed out that for nearly a decade, CMG has brought high-quality Chinese films to Lao audiences through nationwide public screenings, earning warm appreciation from viewers.
The collaboration between Laos and China in the film industry has also grown steadily, with joint productions such as Dok Champa Ban (2018) and the recent documentary Journey on the Laos–China Railway reflecting shared stories of friendship, cooperation, and development.
As the screens light up this week, Chinese Film Week stands not only as a celebration of cinema but also as a vivid reminder of the enduring ties and growing cultural connection between the Lao and Chinese peoples.
