Deputy Henrique Capriles denounced this Wednesday that opacity persists after a riot in the Yare III prison, Miranda state, which caused the death of five prisoners and demanded that family visits be restored so that “they can remain calm.”
“We demand speed from the Public Ministry and from the Ombudsman’s Office to assume its constitutional duty to protect human rights,” Capriles said in a publication in X, reports the EFE agency.
In his opinion, both institutions should be accompanying the relatives of the inmates.
«Why hasn’t it happened? Silence cannot become the official response to citizen despair,” he said.
The parliamentarian maintained that the State is the guarantor of the life of each person in custody, which is why he demanded complete clarity regarding this fact.
Capriles said that this is a moment to demonstrate with actions that institutions are changing and that they are at the service of Venezuelans.
On Tuesday, the Ministry for the Penitentiary Service of Venezuela reported that five prisoners died on Monday after a riot in the Yare III prison, after relatives and NGOs denounced an irregular situation in that center and the Prosecutor’s Office announced the start of an investigation.
The Penitentiary Service detailed that on Monday “a fight broke out between prisoners that turned into a riot at the Yare III Capital Region Penitentiary Center,” a “maximum security” establishment that, according to an official statement published on Instagram, is “intended to protect negative leaders and members of criminal gangs.”
In addition, he identified the deceased as Keivin Matamoros, Eliecer Córdaba, Erkin Ramos, José Andrade and Jean Carlos Jiménez.
He then assured that the Public Ministry began an investigation to determine the exact causes of what happened.
On Monday, the NGO Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) reported in X an “irregular situation” in the facility and the suspension of family visits, without any explanation.
Hours later, the Prosecutor’s Office announced the start of an investigation, although without clarifying what happened in prison.
