Today, Saturday, the Qatari national team opened its participation in the 2026 World Cup, held in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, with a valuable draw against its Swiss counterpart at Levi’s Stadium in the American city of Santa Clara.
“Al-Anabi” entered the match with difficulty, as it faced intense Swiss pressure, which imposed a siege on its defensive areas, and resulted in scoring an early goal through striker Brielle Embolo from a penalty kick in the 17th minute, before the first period ended with Switzerland leading by one goal without a response.
In the second half, the Qatari team’s performance improved relatively despite the continued Swiss control, before they succeeded in equalizing in stoppage time, following an organized attack during which the defender of Algerian origins, Khoukhi Boualem, took advantage of his teammate Hammam Al-Amin’s hand, and turned it with a precise header past the Swiss goalkeeper.
The referee blew the final whistle amid great joy among the players and technical staff of the Qatari team, which achieved the first point in its history in the World Cup tournaments, after three consecutive defeats in its first participation on home soil four years ago.
