Participants in the first national forum on “Colorectal Cancer Developments,” organized at Mustafa Istanbul University in Camp recently, highlighted the importance of early detection of cancer to avoid reaching advanced stages of this disease, which makes treatment difficult and raises its costs to the maximum.
Dr. Makrashi Al-Hajj, a surgeon and head of the Association for Assistance to Cancer Patients in the state of Blida, confirmed that the world now records about two million cases of colon cancer annually and leads to the death of about 900,000 people from this disease, which has made many countries classify colon cancer as the second most deadly, especially since it is recorded in families from vulnerable groups.
The spokesman added that Algeria records about 7,000 new infections annually, equally between the sexes, with 3,500 cases for each, which requires raising awareness among all segments of society in order to raise awareness of the necessity of early diagnosis through detection by scientific methods, especially in light of the absence of symptoms of infection other than cases of abdominal bloating, and it is not limited to colon cancer alone.
Dr. Makrashi emphasized the prevention aspect of fighting obesity and adopting a strict diet based on avoiding some foods that are harmful to health, especially those that affect the digestive system.
Dr. Larabi, who specializes in radiology examination, stressed the necessity of searching for developments in the disease during the examination stages using modern methods that science has discovered, including using air technology instead of anesthesia, especially among the elderly group.
Mr. Larabi considered organizing this forum as a concerted effort with the state’s efforts to limit this disease and fight it, as well as to encourage scientific research to reach the latest developments within the framework of joint work between the university, health, and various stakeholders in this field, considering that the fight against cancer begins with scientific support and research into developments, not treatment.
For his part, the person responsible for managing the affairs of Mustafa Istanbul University in the Yunus Mishal camp stressed the importance of coordination between the university and various actors in the field of health, including organizing such scientific forums. He appreciated the President of the Republic’s decision to establish cancer treatment centers in every state, which would raise the level of community awareness and contribute to containing this disease through early detection.
The spokesman recalled the official and public demand that was addressed to the central authorities to open a college of medicine in the state of Camp, where work is being done in coordination with the interests of the Health Directorate in this direction.
It is noteworthy that the first national forum on developments in colorectal cancer was organized by the University of Camp, the Al-Fajr Association to Help Cancer Patients in Blida, the Radiological Detection Center Chahid Belkacemi, and the Algerian Red Crescent. It included several interventions framed by specialists in this field who came from several states and from outside the country.
On the sidelines of the demonstration, a prostate cancer screening campaign was conducted for the benefit of those attending this forum.
