Arab Parliament Speaker Mohamed Ahmed Al-Yamahi strongly condemned Nauru’s opening of an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, calling the move a violation of international law and United Nations resolutions and a challenge to the international consensus on the city’s legal and historical status.
Al-Yamahi said East Jerusalem is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territories and that measures seeking to alter its legal, historical or demographic character are invalid and have no legal effect. He cited U.N. Security Council resolutions 476 and 478, adopted in 1980, which rejected measures aimed at changing Jerusalem’s status and called on countries not to establish diplomatic missions there.
He said opening an embassy in Jerusalem does not create legal rights for the occupation or change the city’s status as occupied Palestinian territory. He warned that such moves could encourage settlement, annexation and other policies that undermine prospects for a just peace.
Al-Yamahi called on Nauru to immediately reverse the decision and reaffirmed the Arab Parliament’s commitment to opposing measures aimed at undermining Palestinian national rights. He said lasting peace and stability require ending the occupation and establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
