Brussels bans electric scooters: too many accidents, too many abuses

Brussels will ban borrowing from next year electric scootersthe authorities of the Belgian capital announced, justifying the decision also with the increased number of accidents. A similar measure has already been adopted by some other European cities. “Too many accidents, too many inconveniences, too many abuses: Brussels is turning a new page on rental cars,” wrote the head of the Brussels regional government on social networks Boris Dillies.

His administration has announced that they will not renew the licenses received by current service providers Bolt and Dott, which expire at the end of this year. As the city moves away from electric scooters, it will strengthen its bike-sharing network and also plans to expand the availability of electric bikes on the streets.

The regional government justified the ban with an alarming increase in the number of accidents involving electric scooters. In 2025, 666 people were injured in them, which is 26 percent more than the year before. In addition, the injuries can be extremely severe, and drivers are significantly more exposed to the risk of head and face injuries. According to authorities, scooters are also often parked improperly, obstruct traffic and are used for crimes such as drug trafficking. As revealed by the Brussels government, stun guns were used in just 25 shootings in 2025, it reported Euronews.

Bolt and Dott have condemned the decision, which they say could put dozens of mostly low-skilled workers out of work. In recent years, similar measures have already been taken in Paris, Madrid and Prague.

Even in Slovenia, warnings about the frequent ones are heard accidents with electric scooters. at least 700 are said to be injured in them every year. As a result, the government changed the law on drivers. The main change concerns the use of light motor vehicles (including electric scooters) and mopeds. A person over the age of 15 can drive such a means of transport on it.
