As Luxembourg continues to experience extremely elevated temperatures, the Ministry of Health has reiterated important recommendations regarding the safe use of medications during hot weather.
While staying hydrated and seeking protection from the sun are essential measures during a heatwave, the authorities have also drawn attention to the risks posed by certain pharmaceuticals. Some medications can accelerate dehydration, disrupt the body’s temperature regulation, or be less well tolerated in extreme heat. Elderly individuals, people with chronic diseases, and those taking multiple medications simultaneously are considered particularly vulnerable.
In addition, certain drugs can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. This applies, for example, to various antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and antidepressants.
The National Health Directorate has stressed that treatment should never be changed or stopped without prior consultation with a medical professional. Self-medication is strongly discouraged during periods of extreme heat. If any uncertainties arise, individuals are advised to consult a doctor or pharmacist.
The authorities also reminded the public to adhere to storage guidelines for medications, as high temperatures can affect their quality.
The overarching recommendations remain clear: drink water regularly, spend time in cool environments, avoid prolonged heat stress, and seek medical or pharmaceutical advice if any questions arise.
