A major renovation is coming soon to all Aldi stores, with test operations already underway at the first locations, Világgazdaság reported.
Aldi Süd—which includes Aldi Hungary—is renovating its stores worldwide. Behind this effort is an Australian design firm, Landini Associates, that developed the new global concept.
Until now, Aldi has been characterized by narrow aisles, gray shelves, and neon lighting; the German discount chain’s stores have never been known for their ambiance, but rather for their prices.
However, that may be coming to an end, as Aldi Süd is working on a completely new look for all of its stores.
The Australian design firm responsible for the project described the goal as “reinventing the language of discount retail.”
Landini Associates and Aldi Süd have been working together for 14 years. The partnership began with “Project Fresh,” the complete renovation of Aldi stores in Australia. This was followed by the Chinese stores, and then the “Aldi Corner Store” concept, a smaller store format tailored to local needs in Australia. The design firm is now implementing a globally applicable store concept.
The German discount chain wants to focus on its core market: instead of a rigid, uniform design, it is introducing a modular system consisting of fixed colors, fonts, and pictograms that can be adapted to different building types and store sizes.

According to reports,
Aldi is prioritizing stores in the U.S., Australia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Slovenia, Switzerland, as well as the U.K. and Ireland, and is redesigning them to suit local conditions.
The project is managed by a group-wide real estate committee led by Aldi USA in collaboration with the Australian subsidiary. Aldi Süd has not yet officially commented on the plans.
