For more than two decades, Nicholas Azan, Chairman of Omega Manufacturing Limited, incorporated in 2002, has dedicated his life not only to building successful businesses but also to transforming communities across Kingston.

His work has never been solely about construction, real estate, manufacturing, or his profession as a chemist. It has always been about creating opportunities, restoring pride, and proving that Jamaica’s inner city communities deserve world-class investment.

“My journey began after I left my first and only job with Quantity Dealers Limited,” Azan recalls. “After gaining valuable experience, I started my own business, Better Value Hardware, and later founded Omega Manufacturing Limited. What began as a small enterprise has grown into one of Jamaica’s leading manufacturing companies.”

As the business expanded, Omega Manufacturing purchased its first property at 160–164 Spanish Town Road. “Most people saw a rundown property. I saw potential.” He restored the property, relocated the factory there, and established a hardware business. That investment became the foundation of an even greater vision.

After settling into the area, Azan recognised the opportunities that would come with the planned expansion of the Kingston port and the relocation of businesses from the Kingston Free Zone. During his travels abroad, he noticed a common trend: roads running alongside major ports had become vibrant commercial corridors filled with logistics centres, warehouses, manufacturers, and modern business parks.

“I asked myself, why can’t Spanish Town Road become that? Why can’t this corridor look like something you would see anywhere in the developed world?”

That vision led to the development of Portofino Wharves in 2018. Almost immediately, however, the project encountered an unexpected challenge when the Government commenced the Three Miles road and bridge improvement project in January 2019.

The extensive infrastructure works created significant logistical difficulties and limited access to the development. Rather than allowing the setback to discourage him, Azan remained committed to the long-term vision.

One principle has guided every development he has undertaken: the people who live in the community must benefit from its transformation. “I have always believed that residents should be part of the development happening in their communities. We employ both skilled and unskilled workers from the surrounding areas. If they don’t have the skills, we train them.”

This investment in people became one of his proudest accomplishments. Many individuals who joined his projects with little or no construction experience have since become qualified tradesmen who operate their own businesses.

“Our greatest challenge wasn’t the projects themselves” Azan explains. “It was finding enough skilled labour because many experienced tradesmen had already been recruited by large developments uptown. So we trained the people who were available. Today many of them are successful craftsmen working independently.”

Azan attributes the success of his developments to collaboration.

Private enterprise, local manufacturers, banks, government agencies, the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, schools, churches, community leaders, residents, and other stakeholders all worked together to bring these projects to life.

His ultimate goal is to see every underdeveloped property along the Spanish Town Road corridor transformed into modern commercial spaces with international standards and community sustainability at its core.

“I was tired of looking at zinc fences, abandoned properties, crime, and violence. I wanted people to see something different. I wanted to bring a first-world look to the inner city.”

“The real measurement isn’t the beautification of the space. It’s how many lives have changed because of the development.”

Every project creates employment from the first day with each completed complex delivering between 10 and 30 new enterprises. Overall, they stimulate the economy as through enterprise and employment creation, people are able to enter the formal workforce, qualify for mortgages, earn steady incomes, own homes, and provide better futures for their families.

“When communities are developed, when businesses invest, and when people have opportunities to work, crime begins to decline,” Azan asserts. “Development creates hope, dignity, opportunity, and purpose. Never allow where you come from to determine where you can go. Think big. Think modern. Believe in yourself. Dream beyond your surroundings. The sky is the limit.”
