Miami/Cuban artist Ernesto García Sánchez presents in Miami Couplings (Couplings), a personal exhibition in which he continues his investigations into painting, geometry, line and the construction of space. The exhibition, which opened on September 10, will remain open until October 10 and marks the creator’s fourth collaboration with Mindy Solomon Gallery and his third solo show in that space.
In CouplingsGarcía Sánchez starts from paintings that, once apparently finished, he cuts and reconstructs. The procedure allows him to dismantle the initial composition to find new relationships between its parts and question the idea that a work is definitively resolved when the artist concludes his image. More than correcting the original painting, the creator explains, its purpose is to put it back “in play” and open other possibilities within the creative process itself.
Born in Havana in 1989 and currently living in Mexico, García Sánchez graduated in painting from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in 2009 and subsequently studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), where he completed his training in 2015. In Mérida, Yucatán, he founded Taller 62, a project that combines an artist’s studio, exhibition space and cafeteria and seeks to promote artistic exchange with the community.
Her relationship with Mindy Solomon Gallery dates back a decade. There he presented Schemesin 2016; Linearityin 2018; the virtual exhibition 90 Days of Explorationin 2020, and Greetings From Yucatanin 2023. His work is also part of collections such as the Jorge M. Pérez Collection/Espacio 23, the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection (CIFO) and the collection of the Museo Jumex.
