A taxi driver from Bucharest is suspected of having stolen a customer’s phone and, with the help of two accomplices, unlocked the device, transferring, through the banking applications installed on it, the sum of 15,000 lei.
The three are prosecuted, one of them being remanded in custody, and the other two being placed under judicial control.
The investigation coordinated by the prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Court began following events that took place in February of this year.
“Regarding the evidence administered, it was essentially noted that the defendants, on 13.02.2026, based on a previous subjective connection, after one of them, a taxi driver, stole the mobile phone belonging to the injured person he was transporting with the car used as a taxi, with the help of the other two defendants, they managed to unlock the phone and access the banking applications installed on this device. Later, they carried out fraudulent financial transactions, in the amount of approximately 15,000 lei, thus causing damage to the injured person”, according to a press release published on Monday by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Court.
Last week, the case prosecutor and the policemen from the Police Sector 3 – Section 27 conducted a house search in Bucharest, in this case, identifying and picking up goods useful to the case, namely clothing items and computer data storage media.
The taxi driver and his accomplices are indicted for theft qualified, illegal access to a computer system in continuous form and carrying out fraudulent financial operations in continuous form.
Two of the defendants were placed under judicial control for 60 days, and the third was presented to the judge of rights and liberties of the Bucharest Court with the proposal of arrest preventive, measure ordered by the court.
