The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) has officially announced the issue of a new silver collector’s euro coin with a nominal value of 10 euros. The numismatic novelty is created on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the important poet, novelist and founder of modern Slovak poetry, Ivan Krasko.
According to the information published in the bank’s announcement, the coin will be in circulation from July 2026. The collector’s item, which has the status of legal tender in the territory of the Slovak Republic, is made of an alloy containing 900 parts of silver and 100 parts of copper. The coin with a weight of 18 grams and a diameter of 34 millimeters is a tribute to a personality who significantly influenced the Slovak culture of the 20th century.
Symbolism in coin design
Artistic design of the collector’s euro coin, the author of which is Mgr. Art. Peter Valach, reflects not only the image of the author, but also the deep symbolism associated with his literary legacy. On the reverse side of the coin, there is a portrait of Ivan Krasko, complete with the dates of his birth and death, i.e. 1876 and 1958. The poet’s name is surrounded by a graphic line that completes the composition.
The obverse side of the coin features a complex graphic motif dominated by a raven in a composition with a cloud and rain falling on a cross. This scene is complemented by a facsimile of the poet’s birth name Ján Botto, the national emblem of the Slovak Republic, the nominal value of ten euros and the name of the state. The quality of the processing is guaranteed by the Mint of Kremnica, whose mark, together with the author’s initials, is located in the right part of the coin field.
Part of the cultural heritage
The new coin issue continues the tradition of commemorating the personalities of Slovak history through numismatics. In addition to the artistic rendering on both sides of the coin, the edge of this silver currency also bears an inscription that clearly identifies Ivan Krasko as the founder of modern Slovak poetry of the 20th century. For collectors and those interested in Slovak history, the coin will be available in the coming weeks, while the National Bank of Slovakia has set strict technical parameters during minting to guarantee high quality and accuracy of processing.
