The Union of Guilds requested the immediate dismissal of the head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Piero Corvetto Salinasafter the failures recorded during the election day on April 12.
Through a statement, the union expressed its “deep concern” over what it described as serious events that would have compromised the integrity of the electoral process, affecting citizen trust and violating fundamental principles of democracy.
The statement maintains that the ONPE, in accordance with the Organic Law of Elections and its own organic law, has the direct responsibility of guaranteeing adequate conditions for suffrage throughout the country, which – as they indicated – was not fulfilled.
The Union of Guilds criticized that thousands of tables were installed late or were not enabled due to lack of electoral material, which prevented citizens from exercising their right to vote.
Likewise, he warned of problems in the operation of the Technological Solution to Support Scrutiny (STAE)which would have presented failures in a significant number of tables.
The group considered it especially worrying that these deficiencies were recorded in Lima and Callao, where – they noted – logistics had to operate more efficiently due to its proximity to distribution centers.
Along these lines, they questioned the public performance of the head of the ONPE, considering that he has not contributed to clarifying the facts or granting legitimacy to the electoral process.
Faced with this scenario, the union requested the National Board of Justice (JNJ) the immediate dismissal of Corvetto and the relief of the officials involved in organizing the process.
They indicated that these measures are necessary to guarantee that the second electoral round takes place in a transparent, reliable manner and in strict respect of the popular will.
The Society of Foreign Trade of Peru (ComexPerú) expressed his rejection of the performance of the ONPE during the first round of the elections General Elections 2026considering that the management headed by Piero Corvetto Salinas did not live up to the democratic demands of the country. In a statement, the union noted that critical operational problems were evident that generated disorder and unrest among citizens.
According to the document, one of the main inconveniences was the delay in the installation of voting tables, which directly affected voters who came early to vote. ComexPerú described this situation as an example of poor planning and limited capacity to respond to contingencies. Added to this was the slowness in the processing of minutes, especially in Lima, which, he warned, increased uncertainty in a political context already marked by polarization.
Given this scenario, the union demanded that Corvetto not continue as head of the ONPE in the face of the second electoral round. He argued that even the JNE has filed a criminal complaint in the context of the recorded deficiencies, which is why he considers an immediate replacement necessary to correct the course and reinforce the internal controls of the electoral body.
Finally, ComexPerú called on the JNE to act with professionalism and transparency, in order to guarantee that the results faithfully reflect the popular will. Likewise, it required the authorities to maintain constant, verifiable and real-time communication about the progress of the process and the corrective measures that will be implemented for the runoff.
