Butcher to receive Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to sport

BRIDGETOWN, Bar­ba­dos – Bar­ba­di­an Roland Butch­er will be ho­n­oured by Sport­ing Equals with a Spe­cial Life­time Achieve­ment Award dur­ing their awards cer­e­mo­ny this week­end.

The 72-year-old Butch­er will re­ceive the award along with for­mer women’s rug­by play­er Mag­gie Alphon­si on April 18.

They join a pres­ti­gious group of past re­cip­i­ents in­clud­ing Denise Lewis, Sol Camp­bell, Ja­son Robin­son and Lin­ford Christie, whose ca­reers have de­liv­ered last­ing im­pact, bro­ken bar­ri­ers and helped shape a more in­clu­sive sport­ing land­scape.

Butch­er made his­to­ry in 1980 as the first Black crick­eter to rep­re­sent Eng­land in Test crick­et. He en­joyed a dis­tin­guished coun­ty ca­reer with Mid­dle­sex from 1974 to 1990, play­ing a cen­tral role in a dom­i­nant pe­ri­od that de­liv­ered six Coun­ty Cham­pi­onship ti­tles.

Be­yond his play­ing ca­reer, Butch­er has ded­i­cat­ed his life to the sport as a coach, ad­min­is­tra­tor and men­tor. His au­to­bi­og­ra­phy “Break­ing Bar­ri­ers” chron­i­cles his jour­ney and pi­o­neer­ing im­pact on the game.

“I’m de­light­ed and tru­ly ho­n­oured to be nom­i­nat­ed for a Spe­cial Life­time Achieve­ment Award by Sport­ing Equals and to re­ceive this recog­ni­tion along­side Mag­gie Alphon­si,” Butch­er said.

“I’m re­al­ly look­ing for­ward to at­tend­ing the 2026 Sport­ing Equals Awards, and join­ing a pres­ti­gious group of past re­cip­i­ents.”

Alphon­si is re­gard­ed as one of the most in­flu­en­tial fig­ures in the his­to­ry of women’s rug­by.

She earned 74 Eng­land caps, scored 28 tries, and played a key role in Eng­land’s record break­ing sev­en con­sec­u­tive Six Na­tions ti­tles. She was al­so a cen­tral fig­ure in the team that won the 2014 Women’s Rug­by World Cup and the BBC Sports Per­son­al­i­ty Team of the Year award.
