VINCENTIAN TABLE TENNIS PLAYER, Kimoni Shoy, is part of the contingent representing St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) at the Caribbean and Central American Games (CAC),and the Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships in the Dominican Republic being staged from April 6-23. 2026.
Shoy, a resident of Rose Bank in North Leeward, left the State as part of the national team on April 4, 2026 and is expected to return on April 16.
Speaking with SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday, April 8, the young athlete reflected on his journey in the sport and his experience competing at the regional level.
Shoy revealed that he has been playing table tennis since 2021, steadily developing his skills and earning the opportunity to represent his country on a larger stage. Thus far in the competition, the Vincentian three-member team has faced strong opponents, including from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Despite putting in determined performances, the team was unable to secure victories in those encounters losing 3-0 in both games played.
Shoy acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the team’s commitment to improve as the tournament progresses.
“We are working on our errors from the last games and trying to come back stronger,” he said.
He also noted that while the team made preparations ahead of the championships, there were some limitations that affected their readiness.
“We were preparing but it wasn’t the best in terms of the time…we’re just trying to work on it,” he added.
The experience of travelling and competing internationally has been a rewarding one for Shoy, who expressed pride in representing St Vincent and the Grenadines, stating, “It’s a good experience and I feel great”.
While results have not yet gone in the team’s favour, Shoy remains optimistic and continues to approach the competition with determination and a positive mindset. He also used the opportunity to encourage greater participation in the sport, particularly among young people.
“Tennis is a sport that builds you, I would recommend the sport.” Shoy highlighted his deep passion for table tennis and indicated his intention to continue pursuing the sport in the future, with hopes of further growth and success.
Reflecting on his journey so far, he also expressed appreciation for the individuals who have supported his development along the way, particularly his coach and parents. “They were the ones who made me the person I am today and my coach is who brought me into this, I am grateful to everybody.”
