GENERAL ELECTIONS 2026
More voters turned out to vote on Tuesday than at the last general election.
The parliamentary elections in Greenland is now notorious for a relatively low and declining voter turnout.
Back at the general election in 2022, a new low was reached, when only 47.8 percent of voters cast their vote.
On Tuesday, however, something new happened, and the long-term decline in turnout was turned into an increase.
The turnout on Tuesday was 52.3 percent. An increase of 4.5 percentage points.
We need to go back to the general election in 2011 to find a higher turnout.
In Tuesday’s election, 21,428 votes were cast against 19,733 votes in 2022. An increase of 1,695 votes.
Greenland has become a “hot topic”
During the election campaign, several parties stated that this general election would be particularly important for Greenland in view of the geopolitical situation, where US President Donald Trump has turned the world’s attention to Greenland with his statements that the US needs Greenland for the sake of the country’s national security.
On election night, Sermitsiaq caught up with Demokraatis’ Anna Wangenheim, and she estimated that the international attention as well as the high number of candidates would push up voter turnout:
– I think, first of all, it is an expression of the fact that we have so many nominated candidates.
– And then everything that happens around the world. Greenland has become a hub geopolitically. Hot topic, as they say. And it also makes people interested in voting, because they can see that it is an important choice. Because the crisis is not over yet, and it affects people, said Anne Wangenheim.
